CIP Configuration Checklist

Every circuit listed, with its volume and the longest pipe run

A skid sized for the average circuit will fail on the longest one.

Line sizes and material for supply and return

Return line sizing decides whether the pump keeps its prime.

Spray devices per tank, with type and coverage claim

Coverage is verified with riboflavin later, so the claim needs to be on record now.

Heat exchangers, filters and any dead legs identified

Dead legs are where cycles pass and swabs fail.

Parts that are physically clean-out-of-place listed separately

Clamps, hoses, crates and scale buckets are not reachable by any skid.

Water quality, volume and pressure available at the skid

Recirculated process water must meet potable standard under Regulation (EC) No 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter VII.

Heating source confirmed as steam or electric, with capacity

Heating capacity, not tank size, usually sets the cycle time.

Drain capacity and effluent limits the site is held to

Discharge limits can add screening, balancing or dosing equipment after the fact.

Available floor area, headroom and access route for the skid

Soil chemistry per circuit: protein, fat, carbohydrate, mineral

Soil type decides whether an acid cycle is needed at all.

Pipework velocity at or above 1.5 m/s in every circuit

Below turbulent flow, around Reynolds 10,000, chemistry works without mechanical scrubbing.

Detergent type and concentration per step, with contact time

Sanitization step defined, not assumed to be covered by the wash

A caustic wash removed markedly less biofilm from rough surfaces than from smooth ones in published pilot-scale trials.

Sanitation window length, in hours, agreed with production

A short window forces larger pumps, tanks and heating rather than a cheaper skid.

Reuse strategy: single use, or return routed by turbidity or conductivity

Riboflavin coverage test planned on the installed circuit

Spray behaviour changes with real pipe runs, so a factory result does not transfer.

ATP swab points defined at worst-case locations

Conductivity and total organic carbon monitored on the return line

Conductivity proves detergent is rinsed out; it does not prove the equipment is clean.

Sensor calibration schedule agreed and owned by a named person

An uncalibrated conductivity sensor is a recognised cause of validation failure.

Cycle parameters recorded and retrievable per run

Acceptance criteria written before manufacture starts

Criteria agreed after installation are negotiated from a weak position.

Factory acceptance test scope and sign-off named

Site acceptance run with production soil, not a clean circuit

Document set agreed before shipment

Certification bodies and accepted formats differ between jurisdictions.

Wear parts ordered with the equipment: pump seals, gaskets, valve seats, return-line sensors
