Two things the single number misses

A polar reading alone does not see polymerised material

The practical two-parameter version pairs total polar materials below 24% with polymeric triglycerides below 12%. Oil can pass a polar materials check while carrying polymerised material that affects the product.

No legal limit does not mean no limit

In the United States and Australia the polar materials reading is an internal benchmark operators set for themselves rather than a statutory ceiling, and the United Kingdom has no legal maximum at all. Your own specification, your customer’s specification, or your insurer may still fix a number — it just will not be found in legislation.

What this changes on the machine

A tighter market ceiling shortens the interval between oil changes at a given turnover rate, which pushes the design toward fines removal and oil circulation scope rather than toward a bigger tank. Filtration, skimming and sludge handling are the parts of the specification that respond to a destination limit; tank volume mostly is not.
