What the Sheet Assumes
Return duty is the volumetric flow a round bore has to carry to reach the velocity you asked for: the bore area multiplied by the velocity, converted to cubic metres per hour. It is a geometry calculation, not a pump selection — pump duty also has to cover the static head and the losses in your pipe run, which is the part we work out from the layout.
The spray-device call uses the effective-diameter figure we publish on the main page: one static spray device covers roughly 2.4 m. Above that a rotary jet head is the honest answer, because a static device wets by flooding while a rotary head puts mechanical energy on the wall.
