Line Balance Checklist
Raising one machine’s nominal capacity does not raise line output. Food Safety Magazine states the mechanism plainly: if equipment upstream or downstream cannot accommodate the new flowrate, the goals may not be met. The same source warns that bigger is not always better, because equipment that is too large can challenge the processing system and the increase will not be fully utilised.
Six checks tell you whether new coating capacity will appear as finished product. Fill in what you know. Blanks are answers too — a blank here is a question to take back to the plant, not a reason to stop.
1. Rate check
| Station | Rated output | Actual output at your run speed |
|---|---|---|
| Forming or portioning (upstream) | ||
| Coating section (proposed) | — | |
| Fryer (downstream) |
2. The five checks a number cannot answer
| Check | What to measure | What a failure looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Product spacing | Whether product arrives spaced and oriented, or bunched | Touching product leaves bare faces that no coating setting fixes |
| Batter setting before freezing | Whether a prefry stage exists between coating and the freezer | Liquid batter flows on the freezer belt, causing sticking and coating voids |
| Belt pitch and transfer height | Pitch and discharge height of the stations either side | Product drops, flips or damages the coating at every transfer |
| Utilities at the line terminal | Voltage, phase, frequency and available load at the connection point | The machine arrives and cannot be energised on schedule |
| Cleaning window | Minutes available between runs, and who performs the wash-down | The wet circuit is specified for output and cleaned for neither |
Every buyer asks what capacity the machine runs. The question that actually predicts their output is what the forming machine and the fryer run, at the coating weight they are targeting.

3. What to do with a failure
A failed check is usually not a reason to buy nothing. It is a reason to buy a different size, or to sequence the investment differently. Bring the filled-in checklist to the quotation call and we will size against the constraint you actually have rather than the one the brochure assumes.
Route selection is a separate question — start with the Coating Route Selector. Specification completeness is a third — see the Quotation Readiness Checklist. All three feed the same brief on the main page.
